Are you ready for some football! Want some fantasy with it?

September 11 2011

So the first Sunday of the NFL season is upon us, and it's time for the Chicago Bears to kick ass again ... um ... yeah, we shall see. Anyways, the best time of the year is American Football season. What makes it extra special is fantasy football. I play in a few leagues, but PSC has a new group this year. Looks to be fun. Here is my team: I am hoping some of those former #illini players step up and tun in some extra special performances (and hence, point totals) this year!

Chicago Restaurant Week

February 22 2011

It is that time of year when Chicago Restaurant Week happens. About 150 of the city and suburb restaurants put together a lunch and dinner menu at a fixed price (dinner is $33), This year, four places are on tap: Vie Perennial Seasons Chizakaya As you can see from my Chizakaya Yelp review, not every experience is good. But I do love this week as it is a great place to check out new fooderies. Is there a Restaurant Week in your city? If so, I highly recommend it.

"Leading Your Team with Emotional Intelligence : What is Your EQ?" - Executive’s Club of Chicago New Leaders Circle Event

December 9 2010

On Thursday, December 2nd, 2010, I was able to attend the Executive's Club of Chicago New Leader's Circle Leadership Development Program "Leading Your Team with Emotional Intelligence : What is Your EQ?" While I go to 3 or 4 of these a year, mostly for the networking opportunity, this was one of those events that I really enjoyed. The event had the following presenters: Mary Lawrence Wright, Founder and CEO of Career Compass Worldwide (moderator) Susan Annunzio, President and CEO of Center for High Performance Jim Liautaud, Founder, Liautaud Graduate School of Business, University of Illinois, Chicago Patrick Venetucci, President of Global Operations, Leo Burnett Worldwide The format for these is that each presenter does a 10 minute presentation on the topic and then the moderator moderates a Q&A session. The room these are held in hold about 150 people, and people are usually ducking out right at the Q&A starts. No one got out of their chair for this one. All four of the sp

Honoring our teachers - one in particular

December 5 2010

Heads up: this will be a very personal and rambling post. You have been warned. The past 24 hours has been an interesting emotional roller coaster. Last night, PSC had our yearly holiday party and a very major milestone in my life was recognized and honored. I don't want to share much of that yet - come back on 12/18/2010 for that story - but it has made me reflect on my career path and choices quite a bit recently. As I think back to my path that got me to where I am today, I realize that the people who really made an impact on my career have been educators. People dedicated to the profession of educating others. In my life, I have had three great teachers. The first was my mother. While I never had her as my direct teacher in a school, she instilled a sense of wonder and excitement about science and the arts. As a kid in the suburbs of Detroit and Chicago, she took me to all sorts of classes. I fondly remember spending time at Cranbrook Institute of Science in the student classes

College Football returns to the ’Friendly Confines": Illini dominate Northwestern at the Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field

November 21 2010

As many of you know, or really, for those that have to put up with my tweets and Facebook posts about the University of Illinois Fighting Illini college (American) football, this weekend was a special treat. The Illini and the Northwestern Wildcats play every year in what is very much a rivalry game. This year, in a twist designed to just bring media attention to both schools, the game was played not at the home field of either team, but at Wrigley Field. Yes, the same Wrigley Field that the Chicago Cubs play 60 some odd baseball games every year. The game was already being hyped as a big game with ESPN Game Day coming to the game. And then the Big Ten ruled that the east end zone was too close to the famed Ivy wall for any use. Here is a picture: It turns out that the NCAA sent the Big Ten and both teams a letter. Turns out there needs to be ten yards between the endzone lines any wall. And since there was only one foot, the NCAA would not approve of the field for use. So if the

February 15 2010

So Alex, Roy, and Richard have mentioned it, but I wanted to make sure everyone got the message clearly ... FREE XPAGES TRAINING IN CHICAGO! PSC’s First iPhone Application Available for Download - Crain’s Chicago Golf Guide

June 10 2009

One of the things I love most about working at PSC is that I get to work with technologies other than my passion with Lotus products. One of the areas that PSC is starting to invest in is mobile applications. Just as we do with all of our technology services, we consider mobile applications to be a strategy - and we work with multiple platforms. We have Blackberry applications we have built for customers, but the iPhone gives us a more public way to talk about these. The first iPhone application that we have on the Application Store is for Crains Chicago Business' Golf Guide. The Crain's Chicago Business Golf Guide application is an extension of the Crain's Golf website. The app allows you to located a golf course in the Chicagoland area. Enter your current location, click Find a Course! It will give you back a listing of course in your area. Clicking on a course will give you information about it. You get the course's address, phone number, and info about Fees and Reservati

The inconvenience of this election for me (this is not a political blog)

November 3 2008

So this is a purely personal complaint blog entry ... and has nothing to do with my political beliefs or how I am voting. With the rally for Senator Obama happening at the South end of Grant Park tomorrow night (which will possibility be a victory or defeat speech .. if you really think anyone will call the election tomorrow ... hello 2000), the inconvenience to the folks who live around Grant Park has already started. First, streets are being closed. The park section that is bounded by Lake Shore Drive, Roosevelt Rd, Columbus Drive, and Balbo is already fenced in for the official 75,000 ticketed guests. Balbo is already closed and Columbus and Congress (from Michigan to Columbus) will be closed starting today after rush hour. My building, which is just north of Grant and Millennium Parks is also under seige. A parking ban has started that is from the River to 22nd street and the lake to 90/94 ... which I am in. My parking garage is busting at the seams and there are cops and secre

Time for another review ... Liquid Tension Experiment - Chicago 6.26.2008

June 26 2008

Liquid Tension Experiment brought their 10 anniversary reunion tour to Chicago on 6.26.2008 - last night. This is one of those concerts I have been waiting for a long time ... they only did a handful of shows when they released their 2 jam releases. I have seen Dream Theater many times, and Iron Maiden did a great show this year, but I would have given up both just to see LTE. The show starts. The for guys, Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, and Tony Levin, start jamming. They play about 60 minutes. They ripped out some killer LTE tunes, such as: Acid Rain Kindred Spirits Another Dimension Paradigm Shift Freedom of Speech Universal Mind John and Jordan did something from their "An Evening With ..." CD and we got something I did not know. All of a sudden, Jordan stops playing his keyboard. He walks over to Mike, says something, and then heads off stage. Mike goes on to tell us Jordan is having keyboard problems. So Mike, John, and Tony start jamming. And jammin

The Chicago business community really wants the 2016 Olympics

November 4 2007

On Friday, I was one of the 1200 Chicago business community members who attended The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and The Economic Club of Chicago luncheon address of Dr. Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee. You can read the transcript of his remarks here. Quite a few Olympians were in attendance as Chicago tries to impress on the IOC why we should host the Summer Games in 2016. While most have heard that Chicago is hosting the World Boxing Championships, most do not know that the city put it all together in 6 months! Members of the IOC were here for the WBC ... and Chicago decided to impress them. Mayor Daley spoke about the WBC and why he thinks Chicago is the ideal place for the Summer Games. As I spoke with people before and after the event, everyone was excited about the possibility of hosting the games here in Chicago. I think everyone is a bit cautious on how we pay for it ... but everyone agreed it would be a great for the city. MSNBC covered th

What did you do this weekend? I drank Beer

May 6 2007

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Anyone do anything fun? Sarah and I went to BeerFest 2007 Chicago. Picture this ... a big convention space with over 40 beer makers and distributors servering great beer with a band and lots of people. Like a couple thousand. We had a blast. Sleeping until 10 AM is a great way to start Sunday!

Yummy - Wood Fire Chef’s Dinner at Osteria Via Stato

March 15 2007

One of Sarah and my favorite restaurants is Osteria Via Stato on State Street in Chicago. Italian at its best. We have taken Katherine McGiveny, our mothers, and have gone many times the two of us. The last time we went, head chef David DiGregorio came out and chatted with us and served us a Candied Orange and Hazelnut Gelatto desert. We loved it, but really were warmed at how down to earth and friendly Chef DiGregorio was. As we walked out of the restaurant that night, I noticed a sign that talked about joining Chef David for a Wood Fire Chef's dinner. We loved the idea and invited Ed and his foodie significant other. Last night, the 4 of us went to the event. 6 people sit at what you would call a bar, except behind the bar is a wood fire oven and the prep station. Chef David cooked and served us Homemade bread with olives A cheese plate of Parmesan and young Sardinian pecorino (it was supposed to be just one cheese, but foodie brought up the pecorino and he added it) Oven roaste

Chicago Expressways ... What the heck is the Eisenhower?

February 20 2007

One of the things about Chicago driving is that we tend to ignore the Interstate numbers .. completely. Add in a stretch of Expressway that has two numbers and more than 2 names, it can get confusing when listening to traffic reports on TV and radio. The Chicagoist has a great blog entry today The Dan Ryan "runs from the Circle Interchange with I-290 near downtown Chicago, Illinois through the south side of the city. It is signposted as both Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 north of 66th Street and only Interstate 94 from 66th Street to 99th Street." It opened in 1962 and was named after Cook County Board President Dan Ryan Jr., who had died the previous year. During the initial construction of the highway, it was generally conceded that the location was chosen in order to "reinforce Chicago's racial boundaries ... [forming] a more effective barrier between the largely black South Side ghetto and the largely white working-class neighborhood of Bridgeport to the west." The Steve

Subs so fast you will freak ... an evening with Jimmy John Liautaud

February 12 2007

I had the pleasure of attending the Young Professionals of Chicago's Evening Event with Jimmy John Liautaud last week. Mr Liautaud started Jimmy John's in Charleston, IL and has turned it into a half a billion dollar enterprise. It was interesting to listen to him speak ... he had no restrictions at all (including his language). Some things I found very interesting: He was 2nd from the bottom of his class in high school, has no formal education after that, but learned how to do accounting, procurement, and management on the job. He wanted to start a Chicago Hot Dog stand, but needed $40,000. His dad would only loan him $25,000. Sandwiches was cheaper than Hot Dogs. His dad was in the audience and was definitely a proud father His gorilla marketing idea is brilliant. He hires teams of two that worked for him for 4 years while they were in college. They arrive at a store Sunday night. Monday, they check out the store ... fix it up, clean, etc. They also review the processes of baking b

The last time the Bears were in the Super Bowl...

January 31 2007

Sarah forwarded this to me ... not mine, but still very cool .. but makes me feel old! In honor of the Chicago Bears going to Super Bowl 41. Here are 41 things that have changed from the last time the Chicago Bears played in the Super Bowl (which was Super Bowl 20 in 1986): 1.. Brian Urlacher was in 2nd grade. Rex Grossman was in kindergarten. 2.. Peyton Manning was 10 years old. Eli Manning was 5 years old. Their dad, Archie, had just retired from the NFL two years earlier. 3.. Lovie Smith was in his first college coaching job at University of Tulsa . 4.. Ronald Reagan was the President, and Harold Washington was the Mayor. James R. Thompson was the Governor running for re-election and his office was in the new State of Illinois Center, which is now called the James R. Thompson Center . 5.. George W. Bush was 39 years old and still drinking. His father would run for President two years later. 6.. Rod Blagojevich was just out of law school and was a low-level prosecutor working fo

Bears are going to Miami!

January 22 2007

How cool is it for the Chicago Bears to be going to the Super Bowl !!!! And what a game it was. The Saints put up a good fight in the first half, but the Bears just turned it on the second. I, being at Lotusphere, missed the entire second half! I was in a meeting with the Design Partners for Notes 8. And I was refreshing my Blackberry as fast as I could get the screen to redraw. The first half I was at the Dolphin bar and the loudest Bears fan there! :) Now, can Sarah and I get to Miami to see the game in person .. hmmmmm

Being Treated like Italian VIPs

January 19 2007

Sarah and I went to our favorite restaurant last night, Osteria Via Stado. We have been there many times, enjoying the Italian Tasting Dinner. You get 4 or 5 selections of Antipasti (all you can eat), 2 pastas (again all you can eat) and then a main course. You can also select wine pairs for each course (from 15 to 50 dollars). Thursday was special though. It must have been Sarah's VIP status with Lettuce Entertain You restaurants, or OpenTable VIP (take that Ed), but we got amazing service. At the end of the dinner, Executive Chef/Partner David DiGregorio came over and thanked us for coming. He asked if we had time for something sweet. We enjoyed a candied orange and a Chocolate Hazelnut Gellato. It was amazing. If you ever are in Chicago and need a place to go, go to Osteria. We have taken Kat and many other people. We are talking about taking Ed and his foodie girlfriend there in Feb for the Chef's table :)

PSC mentioned in the Chicago Sun-Times

June 26 2008

PSC was mentioned in the June 16th, 2008 Chicago Sun-Times in an article about Accertify, the fraud protection firm that PSC is involved in. Recognizing a sky-high business opportunity, last year the 43-year-old Geneva native started Schaumburg-based fraud prevention company Accertify. Founded with two former Orbitz colleagues and two principals at IT consultancy PSC Group -- the firm hired by Orbitz in 2001 to implement fraud prevention systems -- Accertify's customers include Southwest Airlines and While Accertify will hire additional sales and technical talent with the Intel money, the company will also continue to partner with neighbor and stakeholder PSC Group and the firm's approximately 120-person staff. "We have been able to use them and have the resources of a much larger company with the cash burn of a much smaller company," Liesendahl said. Nice article. Congrats to the Accertify and PSC folks!

Crain’s ChicagoBusiness promotes PSC’s iPhone app

June 25 2009

Crain's ChicagoBusiness sent out an email to it's newsletter list promoting the Crains's Chicago Golf iPhone application. What I love about this is Crain's is promoting their own website and services, but are also promoting PSC. You can see that in the picture, they highlighted that we build the application. The application also has text on the main page "Developed by PSC Group, LLC" with a page of information about us. Not only is PSC involved in developing applications for the hottest application platform today, but we have a great partnership with someone who wants to see us succeed. You can download the Crain's Chicago Golf iPhone app from the iTunes Application Store. Search for Crain's Chicago Golf or PSC Group.
