MS Office Constants Database Redux

January 31 2006

I demonstrated this during the Lotusphere 2006 Jumpstart session I did on Integration, and a gentleman by the name of John Coolidge was in the front row. He commented he worked with Tom Duff to make the database. The version I had (and Tom is linking to) only had Office 2000 and Office XP (2002) constants in the database. John read my blog comment and we emailed. I volunteered to host the current version (its really big now ... 5+ megs zipped). This version adds Office 2003 constants and another neat feature. Go to the LSS view and click the Export button. You will get a MS Excel listing of all of the constants in a manner you can use as an Include file in LotusScript. I have a couple ideas of how to improve this, but this is a great start. Thanks John! MS Office Constants Database - 1.31.2006

The week after

January 31 2006

The week after Lotusphere is always one of the hardest weeks of the year for me. Not only do I have to come down from the high that is "Notes Mecca" ... and recovering from all the parties and drinking and late nights. I ALWAYS get sick after Lotusphere. Hopefully not this year ... I have a busy February. Lots of travel and fun stuff to do. Hope everyone is energized with the great Lotusphere messages and energy. Back to work we go.

Taking a break after Lotusphere

January 28 2006

I have been in Orlando for over a week now ... and I am just beat. Lotusphere always takes a lot out of me. Sessions, a booth, all the talking, drinking, and lack of sleep usually ends up being me sick for a while after sphere. So this year I am spending 4 days doing nothing. My father lives in Orlando, so I will be at his place hanging out. Friday was sun, dinner with the family, and movies. Today will be more of that, just add in some good sushi. I hope everyone travels home safely (if you were at sphere) and I will be back Tuesday.

Lotusphere2006 Wiki Page - Slides and Demo Files

January 27 2006

So I came up with a great idea, even if I am hurting after trying to drink an Irishman under the table last night. Yeah, I lost. Anyways, I thought that what we should do is put together a page with a link to all of the Lotusphere session slides and demo files that all of us will be posting over the next couple of days. Everyone should go here and add a link to your presentation. I added the first couple that I know about. I will try to get Ed to blog about it to make everyone see it.

My first OpenNTF.org project - Template Control

January 27 2006

Bruce has been nagging me for quite a while to get with the OpenNTF program (I figured hosting it was enough), so here goes. At Lotusphere in my BP309 session, I showed off a Notes application that allows for the management of Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org template files. The first version has a user initiated action to install the templates. My goal is to have it be that the database will detect what a user has, and update the templates via an agent. Basically a way to control all of these templates. It will also serve as a template repository for anyone doing development that requires files, such as my mail merge demos. The first version will go up next week. It will just support Microsoft Office and an Install button. More versions will follow over the next couple of weeks. You can access the project here. Anyone want to provide a good name and logo? I am not an artist by any means :) If you use the app, I would love to hear about it!

Excel Export Database

January 27 2006

Alex and I demonstrated a Notes application that allowed for easy, end user driven, exporting of Notes data to Excel. The database is not ours, just one we found and love to use. I am trying to locate the author to make sure that posting it here is OK with him. Once I do, I will post a link in this space. As we talked about, there has been some discussion on making this work from Excel to Notes and using it with XML. Anyone interested in that?

Microsoft Office Constant Databases

January 27 2006

During my presentations at Lotusphere, I showed off a database that has all of the Microsoft Constants and the raw values. As I demonstrated, you must translate the Constants to the raw values to be able to save the code in LotusScript. Here are the links to the databases that contain Office 2000 and Office XP/2002: R5 R6 anyone have one for Office 2003?

Lotusphere2006 is over

January 26 2006

Another Lotusphere comes to a close. Another amazing year. This year was a big one for me personally. I co-presented the integration Jumpstart with Alex Kassabov from PSC. We did it twice, back to back. 4 hours of speaking in 4:30 is a lot. Packed rooms both times. I did my best practices session and delivered on my promise from last year ... OpenOffice Mail Merge with Notes. A big room that was packed ... and I went head to head with Ed and Libby. PSC had a booth showing off e-phone. e-phone, developed by iscoord ltd., happened to win the Lotus Award for Best in Show ... PSC is the North American distributor. The booth was crazy busy. And meeting with all of our clients, business partners we work with during the year, and the community. Talk about a week that just drains. Lots of people will write about how the week was ... it was KILLER. The energy is the highest I have seen it since the R5 Launch. Surjit Chana, the VP of Marketing and Partners is an amazing add

BP309: Extreme Integration - Techniques for Advanced Integration of Office and OpenOffice with IBM Lotus Notes and Domino

January 25 2006

My session is over, and I think it was one of my best ever. I showed a Word solution, built once with COM and a second time with Web Services. Same result, completely different technologies. I showed how Excel can consume XML from a Domino agent. I displayed how a WinForm application, built in Visual Studio.NET can work with the same data via a web service. I then moved on to show how VSTO has issues (anyone from Microsoft want to help fix it?). I also showed mail merge with OpenOffice Writer and the Notes Personal Address Book. Last, I introduced my soon to be released OpenNTF.org project which will allow Office and OpenOffice templates to be pushed to users. When I do this session, I typically fill the room and the overflow rooms. This year, they gave me the biggest room at the Swan. It was filled and people were on the floor. But no one was in an overflow room. I hate overflows. You hear the speaker and see the slides, but you do not see the speaker. So I am very gl

JMP204 - The Hitchhikers Guide to Microsoft Office Integration with Lotus Notes and Domino

January 23 2006

Wow. What a way to kick off Lotusphere. My co-worker in crime, Alex Kassabov, and myself had a great time doing out Jumpstarts. We gave JMP204 twice. 1:30 to 3:30 and then 4 to 6. A long afternoon. A great afternoon. We filled the first room to the brim (I am told there were people very angry they could not get in) and had a full room for the second version. I figure over 500 people checked out the integration jumpstarts. From both of us ... Thank you! Presentation: JMP204.PDF Demo Files: JMP204.ZIP Thanks again!

Some fun before the storm - Golf at Bay Hill

January 20 2006

As you can feel the buzz of the coming beast known as Lotusphere (I can see signs going up at the Dolphin), I played 18 holes at Bay Hill today. My father, my boss, and a client of my father's (who is a member of Bay Hill) played. I enjoyed the weather immensely (that is my way for saying I played like crap) ... how can I complain with 70 degree weather and playing golf in shorts in January?

First!

January 19 2006

I think I am the first to arrive ... (I know, picture quality is bad ... was moving fast ... that is the hallway with the escalators down to the Product Showcase). Things look so calm ... before the storm called Lotusphere2006 :) Golf tomorrow :)

New Orleans is Chocolate

January 17 2006

I try not to put any politics on my site ... there is no good way to express political (or religious or sexual) topics without angering someone. I try to keep this site about technical and fun stuff. Reading this quote today, I could not stop from commenting on it. "It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild New Orleans - the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans," the mayor said. "This city will be a majority African American city. It's the way God wants it to be. You can't have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn't be New Orleans." Ray Nagin, Mayor, New Orleans. Woah. I get that I am blessed in my life ... I never forget that. I know that growing up in Upper Middle Class Wheaton, IL was not the hotbed of racism tension or struggle. I have been lucky. I know there are many people out there that are not as privileged or lucky as I am. This is not about that. My thought after reading this is that racism is still present in the US, and it is

January 9 2006

To follow his Led Zeppelin, Rush, and Beattle tribute bands, Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy (drummer) is putting together a tribute band for The Who. Here is an excerpt about it: Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy has put together a tribute band that will play three dates in late May, paying tribute to The Who. The lineup for Amazing Journey - A Tribute To The Who includes Portnoy, Gary Cherone (ex-Van Halen, Extreme), Paul Gilbert (Racer X, ex-Mr. Big) and Billy Sheehan (ex-Mr. Big, David Lee Roth).
