Test Documents for OOXML and ODF standards
October 23 2008At the DII Workshop on OOXML today, one of the issues that is under discussion is creating an test suite of documents that implementers can test their implementation against. My recommendation is that the OOXML (and ODF) camp create something like the ACID test. The ACID test let's browser creators test specific features and functionality and let's the user see where they stand. This is not about implementing hundreds or thousands of pages of a spec, its about meeting specific requirements. There should be a test suite of documents that you can open, edit, save, and create. And then some validator to measure how the specific implementation opens and saves these documents. The documents can be tied to versions of the specifications. What is important is that I, the user, can take a document, run it against the validator, and get a visible score myself. It needs to be transparent. I know there is the ODF Validator, but it does not work very well. There should be one place where I uploa

DII Workshop around OOXML starts today in Redmond
October 23 2008I am back in Redmond, WA this week for the DII Workshop on OOXML. What is great is that this time, I have two other PSC folks with me. David Munaretto, Vice President of Microsoft Services and Andrew Schwantes, OOXML Technical Champion. We are here to listen, learn, and talk about our Case Study around PowerPoint and OOXML. I am betting that this one will be as much fun as the ODF one I attended this summer. I wonder who will attend? :)

Thoughts on the Websphere Portal Technical Conference
October 19 2008This past week, I attended the IBM Websphere Portal Technical Conference in Nashville, TN. I was a guest at the Ephox booth, showing off PSC's work on the implementation of EditLive! within IBM Lotus Quickr for Domino. Here are some thoughts about the conference: The vendor's area was much smaller (under 20 partners) but the booth sizes where much larger. Each partner had what seemed like a 10' x 10' space .. with multiple tables, custom backdrop, etc. The booth setup was great The food at the event was far superior to anything at Lotusphere. Maybe it is the scale (650+ here vs the 6000+ at Lotusphere). It seemed like 1/3 of the attendees were IBM employees .. and not of the product type. Lots and lots of IGS folks there Even though Websphere Portal is a Lotus brand product, most people were surprised to see so much yellow at the conference. Lotus Quickr for J2EE, Lotus Sametime, Lotus Mashups, and even a presentation on widgets and Composite Applications was on the agenda I met

Microsoft embraces Eclipse.org with Silverlight 2
October 14 2008So in a move that many will raise an eyebrow to, Silverlight 2 ships today ... with support for development within the Eclipse.org development environment. Yes, Microsoft is embracing Eclipse.org. Mike Milinkovich, executive director of The Eclipse Foundation, posted a blog entry about this. It seems that Microsoft is funding a third-party, Soyatec, to do the development. Soyatec is already an Eclipse.org member. You can read about the tools at Eclipse Tools for Microsoft Silverlight site. I think this is a great move by Microsoft. The more places someone can do development with Silverlight, the more likely people are to use it.

Integration Custom Development - Why are you not using a framework?
October 6 2008At UKLUG, as people came to the Integra booth, the topic of custom development came up over and over. We call it 'in-applicaiton development' - where you the developer write code in Script Libraries and/or Agents that connects Notes to the third-party application. Over and over, the issues of proper Notes application development and how hard it was just to add a new column to a report. I know these issues well ... since I have experienced them since 1993! I have 15 years of battle scars on the pain that in-application can cause. Products like Integra make your integration development less of a burden. Instead of having all of your code within each Notes database, Integra locates all of the code, templates, and logic with the report Profile in the Integra database. They only impact to your application is an action button or hot spot that a user can use to trigger the report recreation (which is 100% optional). If you are interested in more information about how Integra can ease your i
PSC is hiring an Administrator
October 4 2008PSC is hiring in another position in our Collaboration team, this time specifically a Lotus Domino Administrator. Alex has the details, but we need someone who can travel. If you have Administration skills in the Sametime, Quickr, Connections (so DB2 and WAS and Portal) that would never hurt you chances :). As before, please comment on Alex's site or contact him directly.
Thoughts on Filtering Planet Lotus
October 1 2008So there has been lots of talk of people wanting some way to filter topics on PlanetLotus.org over the past couple months. With all the talk of the election in the U.S. this fall, as well as personal topics that might not be on target and posts that seem to manipulate the readership. As UKLUG, there was a discussion about this. I can no remember who came up with the idea, but I heard the best solution to this problem. Yancy should not filter anything. Nor should he build filtering tools. But sometimes when I blog, I want to make the decision to keep that post off of PL. I would like to see a tag/category that I can put on any entry, i.e. "NoPL", that Yancy will filter out when he reads the rss feed. This way, I can blog about something, and keep it off PlanetLotus.org. If you follow me via RSS, you can read it all. Also, this way, no one can claim censorship - by the site or other people. The poster makes the choice. Thoughts?
Are you reading Alex Kassabov’s blog?
October 1 2008Are you reading Alex Kassabov's blog? He is on PlanetLotus.org, but you should follow him. Alex is the head of our Collaboration team here at PSC and oversees all of the consultants working on Lotus technology (except Portal, we have a dedicated Portal team that covers multiple vendor's products). He is my boss as well - so the kiss up never hurts, right? His blog has some great thoughts on the Lotus space and other thoughts about consulting and Chicago. Go ahead, follow his blog.
Go to the Lotus Collaboration Summit in Chicago tomorrow - see The Dark Knight on IMAX for FREE!
October 1 2008So how many folks in Chicago are going to the Lotus Collaboration Summit tomorrow at Navy Pier? You can still RSVP. After the event, IBM is hosting a free screening of The Dark Knight in IMAX at 3 PM. If you have not RSVP'd for the movie, just tell the folks at the registration desk. How cool of IBM to do this! Seeing the movie of the summer in full IMAX glory in the city it was filmed (at a location in the movie)!
