Sorry for the dead air here ... I took time off that equates to two weeks in real time. Needed some time to recharge and play the stack of games I got for Christmas! I am out in Los Angeles for the Rose Bowl on Tuesday, so not sure if I will blog between now and Jan 7th. Everyone have a safe and Happy New Year! See you in 2008.

Peter Jackson, New Line, and MGM annouce "The Hobbit" films
December 18th, 2007In the "About Time" category ...
Yeah ... Yeah! ... and YEAH! No word on directors or writers yet .. but this has box office gold and huge potential to be an extension of the best movie trilogy of all time! I can not wait.
PETER JACKSON AND NEW LINE CINEMA JOIN WITH MGM TO PRODUCE “THE HOBBIT”
December 18, 2007
ACADEMY AWARD-WINNER PETER JACKSON AND
NEW LINE CINEMA JOIN WITH MGM
TO PRODUCE “THE HOBBIT,”
EAGERLY-ANTICIPATED FANTASY ADVENTURE EPIC
NEW LINE AND MGM TO CO-PRODUCE AND
SHARE WORLDWIDE DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS
PETER JACKSON AND FRAN WALSH TO EXECUTIVE PRODUCE TWO FILMS BASED ON “THE HOBBIT”
Los Angeles, CA (Tuesday, December 18, 2007) Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson; Harry Sloan, Chairman and CEO, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM); Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of New Line Cinema have jointly announced today that they have entered into the following series of agreements:
* MGM and New Line will co-finance and co-distribute two films, “The Hobbit” and a sequel to “The Hobbit.” New Line will distribute in North America and MGM will distribute internationally.
* Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will serve as Executive Producers of two films based on “The Hobbit.” New Line will manage the production of the films, which will be shot simultaneously.
* Peter Jackson and New Line have settled all litigation relating to the “Lord of the Rings” (LOTR) Trilogy.
Said Peter Jackson, “I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line. ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a legacy we proudly share with Bob and Michael, and together, we share that legacy with millions of loyal fans all over the world. We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth. I also want to thank Harry Sloan and our new friends at MGM for helping us find the common ground necessary to continue that journey.”
“Peter Jackson has proven himself as the filmmaker who can bring the extraordinary imagination of Tolkien to life and we full heartedly agree with the fans worldwide who know he should be making ‘The Hobbit,’” said Sloan, MGM’s Chairman and CEO. “Now that we are all in agreement on ‘The Hobbit,’ we can focus on assembling the production team that will capture this phenomenal tale on film.”
Bob Shaye, New Line Co-Chairman and Co-CEO comments, “We are very pleased we have been able to resolve our differences, and that Peter and Fran will be actively and creatively involved with ‘The Hobbit’ movies. We know they will bring the same passion, care and talent to these films that they so ably accomplished with ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Trilogy.”
“Peter is a visionary filmmaker, and he broke new ground with ‘The Lord of the Rings,’” notes Michael Lynne, New Line Co-Chairman and Co-CEO. “We’re delighted he’s back for ‘The Hobbit’ films and that the Tolkien saga will continue with his imprint. We greatly appreciate the efforts of Harry Sloan, who has been instrumental in helping us reach our new accord.”
The two “Hobbit” films – “The Hobbit” and its sequel – are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, with pre-production beginning as soon as possible. Principal photography is tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of “The Hobbit” release slated for 2010 and its sequel the following year, in 2011.
The Oscar-winning, critically-acclaimed LOTR Trilogy grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide at the box-office. In 2003, “Return of the King” swept the Academy Awards, winning all of the eleven categories in which it was nominated, including Best Picture – the first ever Best Picture win for a fantasy film. The Trilogy’s production was also unprecedented at the time.

Personal Thanks to Mr Langhinrichs
December 12th, 2007I wanted to use this blog entry to personally thank Ben Langhinrichs of Genii Software for his help the past couple weeks. I have been working on a project that required the following:
1. Export a collection of Notes documents, which include Notes Rich Text fields, to a XML file. The XML file will contain HTML of the Notes Rich Text field ... that works in Access 2007 (folks, HTML support in Access 2007 is so bad ... I can not even mention it).
2. Import a XML file, that came from Access 2007, and loop thru is and update existing Notes documents. Oh yeah, and convert the Access HTML back into Notes Rich Text.
3. Export a collection of Notes documents, which include Notes Rich Text fields, to an Excel file .. where the Notes Rich Text becomes RTF.
4.These same Notes documents ... let people create and edit them on the web. With a specific font, font size, and other font attributes like bold ... oh, and 4 of those on each Notes document.
Now, normally this would be a nightmare. Charles wondered where I have been lately ... now you know Charles. I have been in a living hell. :-) Using Midas and CoexEdit, I have gotten all four things to work. And work well. Ben has been instrumental in helping me. Adding (or exposing) features in both products. Writing documentation for how stuff works. Sometimes just putting up with me to help me work thru the issues.
I know that I am a paying customer of Ben here (well, for my customer), but he has gone out of his way to help.
Ben, thank you so much. You have helped me solve some very large problems and make some people very happy. I owe you at least one milk shake this year at Lotusphere. Hopefully all of this work will turn out to a great announcement at Lotusphere between you and our respective friends oversees!

The Web 2.0 Bubble .. the video
December 4th, 2007Man, I so love this video ... I have been thinking about how the Web 2.0 world seems just like the first technology bubble ... people doing lots of stuff (much of it cool) that makes zero profit for anyone but the advertisers. And that model is never sustainable for the mass. Make sure your not eating or drinking anything when you watch this.

Welcome the Lotus Connections Team to the world of blogging
December 3rd, 2007I would like to welcome Suzanne Minassian, Joseph Russo, and David Brooks to the world of IBM Lotus blogs. Synchronous is where you will find information about Lotus Connections and the world of Enterprise Social Networking. I am really happy to welcome these folks to the PSC hosted blogging world. And check out that url ... Synch.rono.us.
P.S. Yes, that is the new theme for the IBM Blog that will be shipping in 8.0.1. Bob might have beat us to the punch, but this blog will always be the inspiration. Suzanne wanted to blog externally, but wanted a user interface that resembled Lotus Connections. The PSC blog server, which hosts Ed, Alan, Adam, Rob, and others (including this blog), is a Domino server. Steve Castledine and I talked and he built that wonderful theme. I think people liked it so much it became the new default! Special thanks to Steve for his wonderful work on the 8.0.1 blog template, the theme, and putting up with requests from Suzanne and myself.

Congrats to Paul, Warren, and all at BE and BlueWave
December 3rd, 2007Everyone else has reported the news about the acquisition of BE Systems Limited in the UK by Blue Wave Technologies Limited of Ireland. No need to rehash the news .. but I just wanted to send a personal congrats to Paul, Warren, Kitty, and all the rest involved. I have watched them present, attempted to work with them at a user group (damn family emergencies) and enjoyed the after hour events of Lotusphere and other conferences. Our community is blessed to have great people in it. Paul, Warren, and Kitty are 3 of those great people.
It is hard to be a small partner in the world of 2007. Lots of people want to be small and have control, but the demand of customers (and working with IBM) makes it hard to be small. You need technology diversity and depth of experts to provide the solutions that customers demand today. When I left Synergistics in 2000, that was the largest company I had ever worked for. They were about 50 people when I left. Boom Vang was 10 when I left them. Artron never had more than 8 employees. PSC has 150. I realized that for myself, I wanted to work at a place with a great foundation. With multiple technology groups that allowed for R&D and changes in the marketplace. I think this is a smart choice for both companies and will allow them to grow at a bigger pace than if they were separate.
Congrats to all and may we toast to the good fortune of all at Lotusphere ... with many rounds of Sake!

Kick to Devin Hester .. the petition
December 3rd, 2007
As a Chicago Bear fan, I love this site. The one shining beacon of hope and enjoyment in this year's Chicago Bears is Devin Hester. Here is a young man in his second year in the NFL. He is 2 touchdowns on a kick-off or punt return to tie the all time record, and 3 from owning it outright. This site is more of a joke than anything .. asking the NFL to penalize teams that do not kick to Devin and other returnmen. I do agree with the premise ... it should be about playing the game ... not finding ways around it.
Thanks for making the Bears worth watching this year Devin.

NotesHound 6 is avaliable
December 3rd, 2007NotesHound, my favorite Third-party tool for the Notes/Domino developer, has just released Version 6 of the tool. Here is the news release:
And some more info:
I love these tools and the NotesHound team are just stellar folks. They are always responsive and open to suggestions. $500 will save you loads of time ... the View Selection Formula Editor is worth it's weight in gold in my opinion. Being able to change every view in a database with a single Find and Replace action is just amazing. I highly recommend NotesHound ... and if you are going to use the tool, make sure you upgrade to Notes/Domino 7.0.3. It fixes a whole slew of DXL issues that drive folks batty in 7.0.2.
Pictures:

NotesHound version 6 is here !!!
After months of hard work we now have version 6 available.
As always, existing customers get the upgrade for free.
This version really has a lot of nice features, some of which you just can't find in any other tool.
The ability to right-click on icons in the Notes client workspace and get a dop-down menu with all the NotesHound tools is, as far as we know, unique to NotesHound.
We also have a more 'standard' toolbar icon but with a twist. When you select a Notes database icon in the workspace and click the toolbar icon you get exactly the same drop-down menu as with the right-click feature.
As of this version, we have also adjusted our prices to a rather large extent.
A Developer license (single user) now costs USD 495 and a Corporate license costs USD 1995.
This is a significant raise compared to the old prices, but is well in line with what the products are worth.
Compared to other tools on the market this is still a very reasonable price. In particular when you keep in mind that upgrades are free.
We hope and trust that our customers will enjoy this new version.
It is our intention to advertise/market the product properly from now on and you might well see us at various venues for Notes/Domino developers.
And some more info:
Some features of this version:
* Completely new release where all NotesHound applications are Win32 applications.
* Removed all Notes client versions of the applications. (Element Library remains a stand-alone Notes database).
* Removed all installation files from NotesHound databases, considerably reducing database sizes.
* Created a new, stand-alone, installation program to install all files.
Databases as well as other files.
* Introducing right-click options on Notes database icons to load NotesHound Win32 applications. A world first.
* Introducing Toolbar icons for quick access to NotesHound Win32 applications.
* NotesHound proprietary File-Database-Open used everywhere, for easy access to templates.
I love these tools and the NotesHound team are just stellar folks. They are always responsive and open to suggestions. $500 will save you loads of time ... the View Selection Formula Editor is worth it's weight in gold in my opinion. The Fighting Illini get picked to play in the Rose Bowl!
December 3rd, 2007Who would have thought it would turn out this way ...
Saturday I decided to say inside, watch the snow turn to freezing rain turn to rain, and just watch college football. Saturday would determine where the Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois ended up for their bowl game. 9 wins and 3 losses was the best turn-around of any team this year ... but probably not good enough for a BCS bid. Ohio State, who the Illini beat when they were #1 in the country, still won the Big 10 conference with only one loss on the year. They got the automatic bid to the BCS and were going to the Rose Bowl. The Illini were destined for the Capital One Bowl Game in Orlando on January 1st. This was perfect for me ... with family in Orlando. I was content.
Then Saturday happened. Oklahoma steamrolls over #1 Missouri. #2 West Virginia loses to PITT, who end the year with a losing record. What the $%^&! So, when the BCS cards fell, Ohio State ended up #1 in the polls again and play LSU for the National Championship. The Rose Bowl, which lost Ohio State, is very proud of their traditions .. picked USC vs Illinois .. the tradition PAC 10 vs Big 10 game. WOW. I guess I need to plan a trip to Pasadena for New Years!
And what about Kansas getting a bid over Mizzou! That is wild stuff. The BCS is definitely broken ... we need a play-off, even if it is a +1 play-off (meaning you earn a spot in one of the 4 BCS bowl games and the 2 highest votes get to play in a final game).
