February 28 2006

I am hosting a topic forum over at LotusUserGroup.org this week on Microsoft Integration: Notes/Domino integration with Microsoft Office - moderated week of February 27, 2006 The two companies may compete, but you and your users need these applications to work together. This week feel free to ask questions about the built-in Microsoft Office integration with Notes and Domino, as well as programmability options and techniques. Feel free to join me over there and ask questions!

Imagine playing any game on this ... or mutliple screens for Notes, Domino Designer, and the Admin client! The downside: requires 3 dual input DVI video cards and a machine that can take them ...

Show-N-Tell Thursday - Revolutionizing Business Process with Notes & Domino Technology

February 23 2006

So Ed was talking smack about how too much of the Show-N-Tell stuff last week was technical. So I decided to take him up on his challenge and talk about a client that lives and breathes Notes. College Bowl Company, Inc. produces and manages the content used by various programs dubbed "The Varsity Sport of the Mind." Think Jeopardy for high school and college students. College Bowl was started in 1953, and since then, they have branched out to multiple brands. The staff at College Bowl is responsible for creating, editing and organizing all the content and the tournaments. College Bowl runs very lean - under 10 full time employees. They rely on volunteers to help run the tournaments and review the content. The journey to move the content process from a typewriter, copy machine, and FedEx envelopes to a electronic content system has taken YEARS. We started out with an Ami Pro stylesheet to just create the content. So we replaced the typewriter there. A first at

The power of WoW

February 17 2006

It amazes me how many people play World of Warcraft. Over 5.5 million subscribers world wide. That is ACTIVE subscribers. Not only is that a lot of money (figure approximately 12 bucks per month for the North American subscribers), but people everywhere play this game. This article on News.com entitled "Power lunching with Wizards and Warriors" shows how far the game has spread. In fairness, the six-month-old guild isn't just for rich folks. There are plenty of bartenders and regular workaday types in the group as well. But what sets "We Know" apart is its concentration of movers and shakers in the technology world. The guild includes Ross Mayfield, CEO of SocialText; Sean Bonner, who runs the Metroblogging network and who is a popular blogger in his own right; John Crain, the chief technology officer of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN); and Diego Rodriguez, a product developer at Ideo, a well-known design company. The article goes on to t

Office 12 is Dead, Long Live 2007 Microsoft Office System

February 16 2006

Today Microsoft announced that Office 12 was a code name. 2007 Microsoft Office System is the official name to the upgrade to Microsoft Office System 2003. First, some resources for you: The Press Release 2007 Microsoft Office System Packaging Fact Sheet 2007 Microsoft Office System Pricing Fact Sheet 2007 Microsoft Office System for Business Intelligence Fact Sheet Q&A: Microsoft Unveils Next Generation of Web Authoring and Design Tools Now some comments: Frontpage is Dead (Yes, I read the support until 2008). Say hello to Microsoft Office Sharepoint Designer 2007 and Microsoft Expression Web Designer. They have split out the functionality. It makes sense from a function stand point, but just means we have two tools to install and use We now have 7 Office "Suites" or packages, 15 Office Applications, 5 Office Servers, 2 Office CALs (Client Access Licenses), 3 Web Access applications, 3 Office Services, and 4 System solutions. Wow. that is a lot to

Show-N-Tell Thursday - Closing a Document in an Office Application Programmatically

February 16 2006

For many years, I have been showing a very simple technique to close an Office document opened programmatically. For example: Set hwd = CreateObject("Word.Application")Call hwd.documents.open (documentpathandfilename) 'do something to the word document here hwd.ActiveDocument.SaveAs (windowstemppath + attachmentfilename + extension)hwd.ActiveDocument.Close hwd.Quit For some reason, Office 2003 Applications do not like this. I have seen errors and crashing using just the ActiveDocument.Close. Here is a way to prevent any issues: Set hwd = CreateObject("Word.Application")Call hwd.documents.open (documentpathandfilename) 'do something to the word document here hwd.ActiveDocument.SaveAs (windowstemppath + attachmentfilename + extension)Call hwd.documents(documentfilename).close(0,1) hwd.Quit A very simple change to one line of the code. Instead of relying on the ActiveDocument property, we are closing the document directly. Hope this helps some of you out there

RIP Andreas Katsulas

February 15 2006

Last night, one of my favorite actors of all time, Andreas Katsulas passed away. Many knew him as the one-armed bad guy Frederick Sykes in The Fugitive. Or the terrorist El Sayed Jaffa in Executive Decision. He is also known for playing many roles on the Star Trek TV shows. I think the role he will be remembered for will always be that of G'Kar, the Narn ambassador on Babylon 5. He had such a presence on screen. J. Michael Straczynski remembers him here: Just over a year ago, Andreas Katsulas -- who loved smoking with a passion that cannot be described -- was diagnosed with lung cancer, which by then had already spread to other areas. He quit smoking at once and went on a healthy diet and vitamin program, but there was little hope of a good resolution even though the new regimen was very good for him. When we spoke about it, he laughed, and said, "Now that I'm dying I've never felt better!" His spirits were always up and positive, putting everyone at ease about his

Webzine you must check-out-The Escapist

February 14 2006

Since moving to reading most of my web content via RSS thru FeedDemon, I rarely go to webpages any more. One of the sites I still go to is Shacknews.com. A great site for gaming stuff, the community has really grown. I get all my gaming news plus lots of other wacky content from there. This is one of those items. The Escapist is a webzine (or on-line magazine for the N00bs) that has a great self-description: The Escapistcovers gaming and gamer culture with a progressive editorial style, with articles and columns by the top writers in and outside of the industry. A weekly publication, its magazine-style updates offer content for a mature audience of gamers, entertainment enthusiasts, industry insiders, and other "NetSet" readers. Each issue, The Escapist explores a central theme. Tuesday's main publish addresses head-on the topics relevant to gamers, while the weekend extra, Casual Friday, explores the lighter side of these heavy issues. Combining print-quality writin

Sony gets smart with the Da Vinci Code

February 14 2006

You would have to be under a rock to not know about the pending May 19th release of The Da Vinci Code movie. Based on the best seller by Dan Browne, the book has stirred more controversy the I can even list. At the heard of the story is a tale of deception that has gone on for more than 2000 years. The book is a work of fiction, but the author mixed in facts to blur the lines. Sony, the movie company backing the making of the movie, has to know that a whirlwind is coming. There will be protests, editorials, and denouncing by the Catholics and Christians of the world. So what did they do? They put up two web sites for the movie, not one. The first is www.thedavincicodemovie.com. It has the trailer, the characters, and more ... everything we expect from a fancy movie site. But it also created The Da Vinci Challenge. This site is dedicated to giving a voice to the people who want to debate the story line. The Da Vinci Challenge offers a thoughtful and faithful response

ILDDM and the Magic of 600

February 10 2006

I am leaving Kansas City today after a full week of Domino.Doc goodness. I love seeing Domino.Doc put to good use, especially with a focused team, proper configuration, and a good amount of training and documentation. It is the only way for Domino.Doc to be successful. I leave KC with a greater appreciation for BBQ (yum, baby back ribs), the flu going around hotels, and the number 600. I can only imagine how much "600" gets use over the next couple of week. :)
