Why you will love your calendar when Notes 8.5.1 ships
August 24 2009One of the areas that I publically speak out about my frustration (which is rare - I save that for internal methods of communication with IBM) is with the Notes calendar. My Calendar for this Friday in Notes 8.5.1 (white blocks are stuff I had to hide from all of you :-) ) I can tell you today that Notes 8.5.1 is going to solve many of those problems, and polish the work done in 8.5.0. Personally, my Notes calendar is the calendar tool I prefer to use - and I have Outlook and Google Calendar accounts in use and have used Apple iCal for years. IBM really got the calendar right. Here are some reasons why: 1. Clicking a calendar link on the web just works. We have asked this for years, but when I am on a web page and click an "Add to my Calendar" link, it should go straight to Notes. With 8.5, Notes acted as the default calendar application in Windows, but the experience in Notes was bad. Now, a single click takes you from the web page to the Meeting Notice in Notes - ready to ad
Time for another review: Inglourious Basterds and Quentin Tarantino Q&A
August 18 2009Tonight I had the pleasure of attending the Chicago International Film Festival Summer Gala that honored Quentin Tarantino and hosted the Chicago premiere of his newest movie "Inglourious Basterds." Because the movie has not opened yet, I am not going to give anything away about the movie. It is Tarantino doing what he does best - a great story with killer dialog. The story is a bit choppy as typical, but it not out of order. It is bloody as all heck [more along the Madsen ear scene in Reservoir Dogs vs. the comical blood in Kill Bill 1] and even bends the history of World War 2 a bit. So no story spoilers - but this is by far Quentin Tarantino's best movie. It flows amazingly and there are not any slow spots. Brad Pitt is great - but Christoph Waltz (who plays Col. Hans Landa) steals the movie. After the movie, Quentin Tarantino did a Q&A with the audience. He answered questions about the movie with passion and humor. He was awesome. When they announced he had time for on

Lotus Knows Marketing - Some Personal Thoughts and a Challenge
August 17 2009You can read all about the blogger briefing this morning here, but I wanted to share some personal thoughts on this. We all know that marketing is the dirty word in the Lotus community. Partners fret over it all the time - many have blogged about it in all forms. Rational and completely irrational. Customers wonder why there is no marketing to back up their decision. And IBM always answered with IBM brand and messaging focused advertising. Like Smart Planet. The Lotus community, or the "Lotus Loyals" as IBM calls us, just shook their head and laughed. But this time, IBM is answering. Kristen Lauria and her marketing team have created the first Lotus branded campaign that I can remember since the R5 days of "I am Superman" ads. It is telling when the campaign is yellow and black - and the IBM logo and masthead on the website is not the focal point. This is also not a "one quarter and done" type of effort. IBM is talking about 24 months of effort - unheard of for the Lotus brand since
Lotus Knows Campaign - Blogger Briefing
August 17 2009Kristen Lauria - VP of Marketing, IBM Lotus and Ed Brill hosted a call for the Lotus bloggers to brief us in the upcoming "Lotus Knows" marketing campaign and jam. Here are my notes: Overview Campaign - 24 month marketing campaign targeting the influential end-user audience to broaden and deepen enthusiasm for Lotus collaboration technology. Inside out approach - tapping into the energy in the Lotus community to generate real content and excitement at campaign launch. Use the "Lotus Loyal" and partners to spread the message to installed end-users and then end-user prospects. Experience matters - awareness elements will reach target audience where they spend their time and drive them to a web site where they can use the technology and share thoughts Extend reach - 360 degree campaign leading with air cover to build preference from end-users Global campaign - creative media beginning in NA, social media extending worldwide, potential media expansion into select markets "This is the ne

Yellow Day - How are you celebrating?
August 11 2009August 11th is Yellow Day - How are you celebrating? Unfortunately the project I have been working on for release today will not come out today (not due to my code for once, but for something I am waiting for to appear on OpenNTF.org before I can post). Hopefully soon! So wear yellow today. Post a blog post. Answer some postings in the LDD forums. Twitter using #LotusKnows or #YellowDay all day long. Celebrate the community.
The technology behind id Tech 5 - if you like technical wonderment, you must read this
August 6 2009Everyone knows that I am a hard core gamer and I love me some id games (Doom, Quake, etc), but what I love even more is the technology behind it. At SIGGraph2009, J.M.P. van Wavern gave a talk titled "id Tech Challenges: From Texture Virtualization to Massive Parallelization" and it blew me away. The tech details on how id is pushing graphic technology is freaking incredible. I didn't understand half of it - but the pictures say everything: Read the presentation here and just be blown away.
Who Watches ...
August 6 2009Who Watches the Lotus Watchmen? The answer? The Composite Wonder Attack Kittens Brigade of course! :-) I thank @fakeedbrill for the name and t-shirt idea! (OK, before anyone get's out of shape here - this is meant to be funny and as a laugh. Nothing backhand, negative, or under the radar. Just a great idea of embracing the chatter of the community and laughing at myself)
Simply put - IamLUG rocked
August 5 2009I am not sure what else I can say besides IamLUG rocked. A few thoughts to expand on that: As an attendee ... IamLUG was a great user group conference. Great food, great people, well organized, and just what many of us needed. I made the observation today that after lots of drama in our community the past couple weeks, we need an event like IamLUG to bring us together - almost in a healing manner. With written communication - be it a blog, IM, or email - so much is up for interpretation. In person, we are all friends and have fun together. No bad blood, very little cliques - just a dysfunctional family that needs the family reunion (and booze) to move on and start fresh. I guess the fact that rounds of drinks cost 40 bucks - yeah, that helped! :-) There were also some amazing sessions this week. I so rarely get to see more than a couple sessions at Lotusphere - I missed only one time slot. Great content from everyone! I know you have all heard about the Lotus Knows marketing event lau
