Thanks for the support ... and thoughts on what makes the Lotus community different

February 12 2011

It is hard to put into words how thankful I am for everyone in my life that reached out with support and thoughts this week. I don't want to talk about the specifics of what happened - google caching and all that - due to some privacy concerns. Things are greatly improving and while it will be a long road of recovery, the worst is behind us. I want to thank everyone for your support. I had such an outpouring of offers of help I can not even describe. People in every corner of the globe offering to help in any way. Words fail me. Thank you - everyone - thank you so much.

It's events like this that make me cherish this thing we call the Lotus community. Most of us only see each other once a year at Lotusphere, but we interact on such a regular basis. Twitter, Facebook, Planet Lotus, Skype, Blogs, and more. We bicker, disagree, sometimes even get into heated arguments. But we have been doing it together for close to twenty years. People leave to do other things and new people join. Yet the community spirit carries on. We celebrate the good and we support each other with the bad. And every time I try to describe our community to outsiders I get a blank stare. How could you be part of a virtual community for that long? Very few communities have lasted this long.

What made me really take stock in our community this week was the sheer percentage of people who reached out. Besides my family and my coworkers at PSC, this was the group the offered the most support. The warmest thoughts. and checking in with me on a regular basis. That speakers louder than who is following who on twitter or what someone said to piss someone else off. I have been asked many times this week how people can help. The biggest support would be to take this seriously. I really am thinking about how to do something with that pledge at #ls12

I know that I will certainly piss someone off in the Lotus community fairly soon. It's the time of year for that to happen again ;-) But until then, thanks to everyone. And I hope everyone can take pause of something that is very rare. No matter what brand or name or color IBM gives the tools we use in the future, we are the Lotus/Yellow community. And I am extremely thankful for being part of it this week.

I am glad to hear that the worst is behind and your family remain in my thoughts and prayers.

I don't know what happened but I'm glad you're going to be okay. :-) We've had our differences but I still find this community to be incredibly strong, resilient, and full of good people. You're one of them.
