Time for another review ... Anvil: The Story of Anvil (and why you must see this!)

May 17 2009

In the midst of the summer movie blockbuster season, there is this little documentary called Anvil: The Story of Anvil. Let me tell you - it might be the best movie you see all year. It is the most moving, inspiring, and telling story about always trying to make your dreams come true while living in reality.

Anvil is a hard rock band that helped create the sound known as 'Thrash" - they came before the "Big 4" - Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth. While all four of those bands have had levels of success, Anvil has not. While their 1982 album "Metal on Metal" is still considered one of the best albums of rock. But how many of you know about Anvil? Even heard the name? Most have not.

This movie is not about a heavy metal band. It is about two friends who are on a journey to fulfill a dream. Two men who met as kids, still best friends. You hear about their journey and you see how much bad luck they have had. It is a story of two fathers, husbands, and men who live a normal middle class lifestyle. They just happen to be two men with a dream of being rock stars - who had that dream in the grasp and lost it. You will find yourself feeling sad, embarrassed, and wishing for a stroke of luck for these men.

The movie covers a period in time where the band is trying to record their thirteenth album and do some touring. The movie follows them on their European 'tour' - all the highs and lows. You will think you are watching "This is Spinal Tap 2" at points - where things happen that you have to believe they are scripted to be funny - and then you realize they are real and honest - and you want to cry. You feel so bad for what these guys have been thru and you want them to succeed.

This movie is going to have a hard road getting folks into seats. It's a documentary. Its about heavy metal. And its about a band you have never heard of. But you should see this movie - its the best movie I have seen in a very long time. I feel more energized to reach for my dreams. More excited to work hard for my goals. More empowered to live my life to take care of my family, friends, and loved ones.  Everyone should see this movie, even if you don't like rock or metal. There is a bit of rock language (swearing) and a few moments of use of sex toys on stage, so I might not take a 7 year old to see it. Otherwise, this is a movie about hope, dreams, and reality. Go see it - NOW! And for those still in doubt, the movie has won the following awards:
  • Truer Than Fiction Award: Nominee Film Independent's Spirit Awards
  • Best Documentary Feature: Edmonton Film Festival
  • Best Documentary Feature: Calgary Film Festival
  • Best Documentary Feature: Galway Film Fleadh
  • Audience Award: Los Angeles Film Festival
  • Audience Award: Sydney Film Festival

Go see it!

  1. 1) Benoit Dubuc says:

I still listen to March of the Crabs very often: one of the best instrumental songs in heavy metal.

All I have is their 2 first albums... I didn't know they were up to 13!!! I didn't even know they still exist!

    Thanks for the info!
